LEGO Paddington Bear: Please Support This Bear. Thank You.

First created by Michael Bond in 1958, everyone’s favourite marmalade addict is now old enough to take residence at the home for retired bears, but Paddington’s popularity shows no sign of slowing down. Coinciding with the release of the third instalment in the excellent feature film series, Paddington in Peruthere are now three LEGO Paddington themed MOCs on LEGO Ideas.

While all three LEGO Ideas designs capture Paddington’s irresistible charm, our favourite here at Brick FLIC is LEGO Paddington Bear by Bricked1980. Submitted just 48 hours ago (at time of writing) this characterful design has already gained nearly 400 supporters and we predict that it will soon be selected as a Staff Pick.

LEGO Ideas Paddington Bear created by Bricked1980, LEGO fan designer of the LEGO Red Telephone Box.

The LEGO Ideas build depicts an opening scene from the book A Bear Called Paddington, when Mr and Mrs Brown first meet their ursine friend on the eponymous railway platform. It features all of the elements that make this story so iconic; from Paddington’s cheeky expression, his duffle coat and hat to the pigeons he shares his marmalade sandwiches with, it is all captured beautifully in brick form. The stickers on Paddington’s suitcase and the label that Aunt Lucy has placed around his neck provide the extra special details that make this a submission that we would love to see make it into the LEGO Ideas 10k Club.

Designer Bricked1980 has enjoyed success with four previous creations on LEGO Ideas reaching the required level of support including the Bricks and Blooms Garden Centre, The Village Post Office and the Brick Town Police Station. Their fourth design, the Red Telephone Box was chosen during the 2nd 2022 LEGO Ideas review phase. 21347: Red London Telephone Box, redesigned by LEGO set designer Marina Stampoli, was released as an official set on 1st February 2024, containing 1460 parts and currently retails for £99.99/US$114.99/1€114.99.

Fun fact: Did you know that Paddington was originally said to have come from ‘darkest Africa’? In a letter to author Michael Bond his agent wrote, ‘you have slipped up in that there are no bears in Africa, darkest or otherwise, and I suggest that you make suitable amends. There are plenty of bears in Asia, Europe and America, and quite a few on the stock exchange.’
