LEGO Van Gogh Sunflowers Unveiled

The LEGO Group and Van Gogh Museum have unveiled the latest addition to the LEGO Art set line, 31215 LEGO Van Gogh Sunflowers.

Unlike 21333 Vincent Van Gogh – The Starry Night which was released on the 22nd May 2022 under the LEGO Ideas theme, LEGO Van Gogh Sunflowers will be added to the LEGO Art theme making it the twentieth set in the line which also includes sets such as 31214: LOVE which was released in January this year, October 2024’s 31213: Mona Lisa, and January 2022’s 31208: Hokusai – The Great Wave, with the full list detailed at the end of this article.

From Mosaics to Masterpieces

The Great Wave was a huge turning point for the LEGO Art theme which, previously, had been heavily focused on mosaic sets. Sets like 31209: The Amazing Spider-Man and 31211: The Fauna Collection – Macaw Parrots were a drastic and welcome change to the series, but Van Gogh’s Sunflowers is the first, since the Great Wave, that genuinely caused me to gasp in awe.

LEGO Van Gogh Sunflowers is based on the fourth of five surviving versions of the painting available for public viewing, the original of which is in the National Gallery in London. The LEGO designer behind the set, Stijn Oom, worked with the Amsterdam Van Gogh museum and the replicar painting of the fourth version they have on site. This version is known for the distinct use of yellow shades in both the flowers and the background.

31215 Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers

With 2165 pieces, LEGO Van Gogh Sunflowers features the 16 sunflowers of the painting, a removable frame with hanger and a printed tile of Van Hogh’s signature. LEGO Designer Stijn Oom said: “Working on one of the world’s most famous paintings can be quite daunting, but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream come true. We collaborated closely with the Van Gogh Museum and its experts, delving into the details to meticulously craft a 3D version of the original artwork.”

“One of the most challenging yet crucial aspects was translating the impasto effect into LEGO bricks while preserving the painting’s asymmetrical yet balanced composition. We are incredibly proud of the result and hope our fans enjoy building it as much as we enjoyed bringing Van Gogh’s masterpiece to life.“

Fun Fact: Many people do not realise that Van Gogh made multiple versions of this famous painting. There are five artworks found at museums all around the world, from Tokyo to Amsterdam. In addition to these five famous version of Sunflowers, he painted another two versions. One is in private hands and the other was unfortunately lost during World War II.
