BDP Series 7: Our Top 10 Designs

The Crowd Support phase for Bricklink Designer Program Series 7 is live! From now through to February 21st, it’s your chance to vote for your favourite builds, and to help decide which will become the next in the fantastic line of Bricklink Designer Program LEGO Sets.

We took a closer look at all 376 LEGO creations, by some incredibly talented fan designers, and chose 5 sets each that we would love to see as the next BDP crowdfunded sets.

The BrickLink Designer Program, also known as BDP, is a joint venture between the LEGO Group and Bricklink. The concept originated in 2019, when Bricklink set up the ‘AFOL Designer Program’ to celebrate 60 years of LEGO and it has since developed following the Group’s acquisition of Bricklink.

The Bricklink Designer Program initially offered a second chance to a selection of LEGO Ideas projects that were rejected in their respective rounds, but has since expanded to original ideas created using BDP series specific LEGO element pallets, in the free Bricklink Stud.io LEGO design software. Two rounds of fan voting is then used to shortlist designs.

Successful LEGO designs are modified to bring them in line with the LEGO Group’s building standards ahead of the crowdfunding stage. Fans can then pre-order the sets, which are made in limited quantities of 30,000. If 3,000 pre-orders are made through crowdfunding, these sets then go into production and will ship out a few months later. Currently, you can still pre-order three of the sets in BDP series 4, all of which have achieved their minimum number of purchases.

BDP Series 7 – Category Analysis

We did a little analysis of the fan designs included in BDP series 7 to see which themes are trending and the results might not be too surprising. As with previous years, the Castle theme has been a popular choice of build. Considering how quickly the Castle sets have sold out in previous BDP series, it is clear why this theme has been a popular choice among Fan Designers.

JOROCK CITY – The Wild West by BRICKUP_

Jorock CIty – The Wild West by BRICKUP_ is packed with story and fantastic design elements. The detail inside and out is incredible and the set is a perfect example of how the Western theme is well overdue a comeback.

BDP Series 7

Blue White Inn by Arachno

The Blue White Inn by Arachno makes me feel the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, smell the aromatic citrus trees, and taste delicious souvlaki fresh from the kitchen. I really love how it evokes all of the feelings of holidays and relaxation. This is the sort of set that would be worth taking your time over.

Bricklink Designer Program Series 7

Mountain Shelter by elevenmocs

The Mountain Shelter by elevenmocs is stunning. I love how the mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to the hikers’ retreat and the forced perspective creates an illusion of vastness. We also can’t ignore the grey mountain goat! I really like how the detailed interior is accessed through the back of the mountain, and all of the cute story elements.

BDP Series 7

Working Windmill by garethbuilds

I can clearly picture the Working Windmill by garethbuilds on my LEGO display. The use of colour is fantastic and the entire scene is wholesome and calm. Inside is where the real magic lies, though, with the working mechanism for the windmill being the star of the show.

Countryside Greenhouse by KingCreations

As a keen gardener, the Countryside Greenhouse by KingCreations is one of the BDP series 7 sets that I would buy in an instant. There are so many details for a set with a pretty small blueprint, but everything just feels like it is in the right place. I would love to be able to potter around in the greenhouse, and watch the wildlife as I sit on the garden bench. Everything about this set is a winner for me.

The Grand Victorian Hotel by GNbrick1331

This beautifully intricate building opens out like a dolls house, immediately capturing the imagination of the stories that lie within. As a fan of the so-called ‘Golden Age’ of detective fiction, this design evokes images for me of 1930’s Devon and a murder mystery novel by Dorothy L Sayers or Agatha Christie. I especially like the chandelier and piano.

BDP Series 7

Penguin Family by JoffreBricks

Maybe because it will soon be Valentine’s Day, but this set warmed my heart. I admire any LEGO designer brave enough to take on the challenge of building animals and this scene, although relatively simple, captures the essence of the family unit. Each of the penguins can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing the builder to adjust them to their preferred position, a really nice touch.

BDP Series 7

Library for your Library by Kgiffencreates

I believe the best way to decorate any space is to cram as many book shelves in as possible and fill them up! What better way to add to this than by including a little LEGO library in among your own books? I especially love the spiral staircase and the dark green and gold accents in this design, I would definitely buy it.

Bricklink Designer Program Series 7

Tangram Box by Legokopen

Until seeing this set I had completely forgotten that, while in primary school, I had a brief obsession with Tangram. Any other Kappa wearing, Tamagotchi playing, Spice Girls fans the same?! For anyone who doesn’t remember the last century, Tangram is a dissection puzzle, consisting of seven flat polygons which are put together to form shapes. This gets my vote for its niche and nostalgia value.

Milwaukee Art Museum – Quadracci Pavilion by marathon_dude

If asked where I think one of America’s largest art museums might be situated, I would guess New York or maybe San Francisco, but did you know it is actually in Milwaukee? In just a few minutes, I went from never having heard of this building to searching for flights to Wisconsin, it looks amazing. Move over Notre Dame, Lady Liberty and the Trevi Fountain, THIS should be the next LEGO Architecture set.
